A better hood for EF 17-40

The EF 17-40 f/4 L USM lens is sold with a hood. Unfortunately, it is very large and not very efficient, as it designed for film or full frame sensors. With the EOS 20D 1.6 crop factor, the 17 mm focal length becomes the angular equivalent of a 27 mm lens. Therefore, I asked myself wether a Canon hood existed with a 77 mm diameter for a focal length smaller than 27 mm.

Two of them could match :
EF24-70 EF17-40 EF24
EF 24-70 f/2.8 L USM
EF 17-40 f/4 L USM
EF 24 f/1.4 L USM

The EF 24-70 bayonet seems to be off backwards a bit compared to the EF 17-40. The associated hood must be quite large and would be stretched out by the same amount on the EF 17-40, resulting in probable vignetting... On the other hand, the EF 17-40 and EF 24 bayonets seem very similar; and with "great confidence" despite its high price, I ordered the associated hood: EW-83DII.

If you roll your mouse on the following images, the original hood EW-83E will be replaced by the EW-83DII:

EW-83E

The result: smaller size, better flare protection, and no trace of vignetting. As the new hood gives much more physical protection, I even removed the UV filter used for this purpose. The gain in quality is very small, but I will now be rid of the occasional filter reflections, especially at night with street lights for instance.

Update: apparently, the EW-83J hood from the more recent EF-S 17-55 lens is also adequate.
