For me, choosing an equipement is 50% about optical qualities and 50% about pratical qualities (weight, stealth, ease of use, auto-focus, stabilization, etc). Weight is of great importance, as I'm always bringing along most of my gear, even for full days of hiking.
Let's take two examples:

My 70-300 DO IS zoom (720 g, 1 lb 9.4 oz) is not at the level of the 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L IS (1,380 g, 3.1 lbs), but there is no way I'm going to haul the latter all day long !
My Cullmann 1200 tripod (555 g, 1 lbs 4 oz) made of aluminium and plastic is not very sturdy... Nevertheless, it is much better than no tripod at all. In windless situations and extended halfway, this tripod and its predecessor (SLIK U2000) has allowed me to take superb pictures using mirror lockup and now the very effective image stabilizer of the 70-300 DO!
